Ya know, I've been thinking...
I got to realizing that while I love both WRPGs and JRPGs, neither have ever struck a balance to the things I like. I mean, I like being able to choose wether I’m a good guy or an evil asshole in my WRPGs, but most of the time, they feel TOO open. In a JRPG, I like following a story, but I would like some more interactivity rather than blindly doing what the game tells me.
Rather, this is the kind of RPG I wanna play.
You star as a silent protagonist, doing whatever plot and events normally happen in a JRPG. Then eventually, you meet the Big Bad of the game. However, the Big Bad actually convinces you, that his way of thinking has logic. Maybe mankind DOES need to be purged. Maybe the Earth WOULD be better off without x magical item or so.
Rather than having to fight against him, I want to JOIN him. And maybe even convince a few of my party members to join me. Sure, I’d be backstabbing the rest, but who cares? I’ve got the most powerful megalomaniac in the world on my side.
Probably the closest thing to this that I’ve played is in Steambot Chronicles, where you can pick whether to help the good guys or help the bad guys, but it’s not really an RPG, so I can’t really count it.
